THE COLLISION BETWEEN “MANDU” AND THE “DENDERAH”



The German cargo liner DENDERAH (5), 115m/4.243gt/10,5 knots; 11/1922 completed by Vulcan Werke AG, Sttetin, for Deutsche Dampfs. Ges, Kosmos, Hamburg; 1926 DENDERAH, Hamburg Amerika Linie, Hamburg; 30/07/1929 when DENDERAH inbound to Santos with dense fog, she was coming into collision by Brazilian cargo liner MANDU, 148m/6.569gt, owned by Lloyd Brasileiro, Rio de Janeiro, which was outbound to New York. The MANDU returned to the port with light damages, while DENDERAH was beached showing large holes and making water. Argentinean tugs GIGANTE and COLOSSO had tried to refloat her but no success, which happened too to German tug SEEFALKE reached later. Meanwhile the DENDERAH was considered a total constructive loss and in 1933 was scraped after raised and used as a hulk.

The DENDERAH on her southbound was an usual visitor to the Portuguese ports of Leixões and Lisbon.
